The UK is currently leading the world in offshore wind farm development, and has an unparalleled opportunity to increase energy security and vastly reduce carbon emissions in the decades to come.
As the number of wind farms and turbines increases, there is a corresponding increase in demand for wind farm support vessels to transport engineers and equipment. Operating in all weathers, these vessels, chartered by the wind farm operators, are costly assets to manage and maintain. AST MSL identified the need for an automated system that could increase the safety and efficiency of these vessels, helping to significantly reduce operational costs.
Working in partnership, AST MSL and two10degrees developed iRams – The Intelligent Remote Asset Management System. Powered by the GAP platform, iRams has been designed to provide owners and operators with a “minute by minute” view of their vessels’ position, speed, heading and important engine data such as fuel usage and engine hours. Through a simple web interface, the vessel operators have access to data in near real-time, allowing them to make important decisions without delay
Real time data is captured from the vessel’s engine management systems and other on-board sensors. This data is encoded and sent via satellite and GSM networks to the Global Alerting Platform (GAP) using an optimised M2M communications protocol. GAP processes and stores the data and displays it on a web-based user interface reflecting the on-board systems.
The interface allows a user to define events and manage alerts. For example, if an engine RPM limit is exceeded, a notification can be e-mailed or sent via SMS to a specified recipient. Using simple geofencing tools, alerts can be generated when a vessel arrives on site or back in port. Similarly, near-real-time operational performance information allows shore-based operation managers to react to situations where fuel consumption could be greatly improved. Reporting tools allow vessel operators to view information to assist them with monitoring and planning as well as engine service scheduling.
