On 25th August 2016 Tom Hunt, 18 years old, will be setting off from Lands End in Cornwall with a goal of reaching John O’Groats in Scotland within 30 days, averaging 29 miles per day and setting a new world record, by becoming the youngest person to run the length of Britain.
New to running, former avid rugby player Tom, unfortunately suffered numerous shoulder injuries and was told last year that he was no longer able to play. To fill his newly acquired spare time, Tom started running, and for the past 12 months has been for a run every single day. He completed his first marathon in September 2015 and has since completed a considerable number of marathons and ultra-marathons. Tom has always been an endurance enthusiast – he completed the demanding Coast To Coast race in 2011, 2012 and 2013 (105 miles of running, cycling and kayaking) and also climbed Kilimanjaro in 2014 (aged just 16).
Tom is running for The ME Association, a UK charity which funds and supports research, and provides information, support and practical advice for people, families and carers affected by M.E. (Myalgic Encephalopathy), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS). He has already raised £7,000 and hopes to raise £15,000.
“I zone out when I run. I feel as though I could run forever, so thought I should put it to good use!”
Two10degrees will be providing Tom with a tracker which will be attached to his backpack and access to a live public map so that his friends, family and supporters can track his progress. The tracking and mapping will also significantly contribute to the evidence required by Guinness World Records.
“Whilst researching ultra-marathon runners, I came across Tom Boother, who two10degrees supported earlier this year in his challenge. He highly recommended getting in contact with the company to see if they could support me too - they said yes, and have been incredibly helpful!”
Tom is being supported by his sister Susie, who will be driving a support vehicle and filming a documentary of his journey. Along the way, they will be staying with a variety of “strangers” who kindly donated their spare rooms, following a call-out on social media, which reached around 10,000 people. When Tom and Susie arrive in Inverness they will be joined by their mother, who will be driving a motorhome for them all to sleep in for the remainder of the journey.
“We’re thrilled to be supporting Tom and look forward to following his world record attempt.”
